Mudumalai Flora

Mudumalai National Park is known for its rich and diverse flora, which includes various species of trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, and grasses. This protected area is detained with three major types of forest. One kind is tropical moist deciduous that is found in the western Benne Block which receives higher rainfall than the other block, second one is tropical dry deciduous forest which is found in the middle and southern tropical dry thorn jungle in the east. Besides these, there are patches of tropical semi ever green forest in the southern and western part of Mudumalai. Here are some of the prominent flora species found in the park:

  • Teak: Mudumalai National Park is famous for its teak plantations, which cover a significant portion of the park.
  • Sandalwood: Sandalwood trees are found in the park, and they are highly valued for their fragrant wood and essential oils.
  • Indian rosewood: Indian rosewood, also known as Sheesham, is a tree species found in Mudumalai National Park.
  • Bamboo: Several species of bamboo, including Bambusa arundinacea and Dendrocalamus strictus, are found in the park.
  • Terminalia: Terminalia trees, such as Terminalia arjuna and Terminalia bellirica, are found in the park and are used for medicinal purposes.
  • Jamun: Jamun trees, also known as black plum trees, are found in the park and are known for their edible fruits.
  • Tamarind: Tamarind trees are found in the park, and they are known for their sour fruits and medicinal properties.
  • Grewia: Grewia trees, such as Grewia tiliaefolia and Grewia hirsuta, are found in the park and are used for medicinal purposes.
  • Honeysuckle: Several species of Honeysuckle, including Lonicera quinquelocularis and Lonicera macranthoides, are found in the park.
  • Grasses: Several species of grasses, including Imperata cylindrica and Arundinella bengalensis, are found in the park.

Apart from these, the park is also home to several species of flowering plants, ferns, and mosses, making it a biodiversity hotspot in India.
